MLB to Commemorate 25th Anniversary of 9/11 With Tributes, Service Events and Special Programming

Major League Baseball is marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a league-wide programme of tributes, community service initiatives and special programming across the United States.

MLB and the New York Mets are joining forces with nonprofit 9/11 Day to host a meal-packing event at Citi Field, bringing together former Mets players, MLB and Mets staff, college baseball and softball players and community volunteers. The initiative is expected to provide thousands of meals for families facing food insecurity across the tri-state area.

The league will also commemorate September 11 at ballparks across Major League Baseball. Players, managers, coaches and umpires are scheduled to wear special New Era caps carrying a “We Shall Not Forget” side patch. The Toronto Blue Jays will feature both Canadian and American flags on their commemorative caps, while the New York Yankees and New York Mets will wear special first-responder caps during their Subway Series matchup.

Ballparks will hold pregame ceremonies and moments of remembrance, including a league-wide moment of silence, special scoreboard tributes and a performance of “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch.

The Yankees and Mets will meet at Yankee Stadium on September 11, adding particular significance to the commemoration in New York, where the attacks had an enduring impact on the city and its communities.

MLB Network is also presenting a new two-hour documentary, “When America Took the Field,” examining baseball’s role in helping Americans find moments of hope and unity following the attacks. The documentary features interviews with Hall of Famers, players, broadcasters and families affected by September 11.

The Yankees have separately announced an extensive programme of remembrance, including participation by members of the 2001 team, first responders and families directly affected by the attacks.

The 25th anniversary comes as communities across the United States pause to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks and honour the first responders, families and survivors whose lives were changed by the tragedy.

Through its September 11 initiatives, MLB is combining remembrance with community service, using the sport’s nationwide reach to honour those affected while supporting communities more than two decades after the attacks.
