A 6.8 magnitude earthquake devastates southern Morocco: at least 1,037 dead and 1,200 injured

An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale in Morocco has left at least 1,037 dead and 1,200 injured , in addition to numerous material damages in several provinces of the country, according to Al-Arabya TV . Of the total injured, 721 are in serious condition. It is the most powerful earthquake recorded in the country , stronger than that of Agadir in February 1960 (5.7) or that of Al Hoceima in February 2004 (6.3).

At 11:11 p.m. local time (midnight in Spain) the earthquake occurred with its epicenter in the town of Ighil , within the province of Al Haouz, between the cities of Marrakech and Agadir , in the south of the country. It had a depth of about 8 kilometers and was located at 30,961 degrees north latitude and 8,413 degrees west longitude, indicated the National Institute of Geophysics (ING).

The telephone lines were interrupted as soon as the catastrophe occurred. In Marrakech and other provinces, in addition to the fatalities, there is numerous material damage with the collapse of houses, businesses, mosques and destroyed vehicles .
