MCD Takes Action Against Illegal Coaching Centers Following Tragic Incident

City Desk, Delhi Magazine: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated stringent action against coaching centers operating in violation of regulations. This decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident where three individuals lost their lives due to waterlogging in the basement of a coaching center. Officials provided this information on Sunday.
A statement issued by the Delhi government highlighted that a team from the MCD visited Old Rajendra Nagar on Sunday to seal the basements of several coaching centers that were found to be operating illegally.
An official stated, “Establishments operating illegally in the basement have been identified, and action has been initiated against them.” The MCD had previously conducted a survey of coaching centers following a significant fire at an institute in Mukherjee Nagar last year.
The current focus is on identifying coaching centers that are violating rules. Another official mentioned that a high-level committee will soon be formed to investigate the incident in Old Rajendra Nagar, Central Delhi, where three civil services aspirants died after the basement of a coaching center flooded due to heavy rains on Saturday.
“We have initiated action against the coaching center which was being run in violation of MCD building bye-laws. Action will be taken against those who misused the basement for commercial activities,” the official said. “Gross criminal negligence has been found on the part of the institute’s owner in ensuring safety measures. The library located in the basement was being run illegally and had only one entry and exit point, which was biometric-based and blocked due to waterlogging,” he added.
“If the exit had been open, the students could have been saved,” the official emphasized. The MCD approves building plans, but if someone uses the basement for commercial activities after declaring it for parking and storage, the agency’s capacity to ensure safety is limited.
