International Desk, Delhi Magazine: Trade tensions between Canada and the US escalated further on Tuesday when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs on the US. The Trudeau government has decided to impose a 25% tariff on US goods, which will apply to US imports worth 30 billion Canadian dollars. This move comes in response to the 25% tariff imposed by the US on Canada and Mexico, marking a significant shift in economic relations between the two countries.

Trudeau Describes US Tariffs as “Irrelevant and Unnecessary”

Justin Trudeau described the US tariffs as “irrelevant and unnecessary,” calling the move completely unfair to Canada. He stated that the Canadian government will challenge the decision under the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA). Trudeau argued that this trade policy violates trade rules and values, and Canada is prepared to take legal action against it.

Which American Products Will Be Affected by the 25% Tariff?

Trudeau clarified that in the first phase, Canada will impose a 25% tariff on US goods worth 30 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 20.6 billion US dollars), which will take effect at midnight US time on Tuesday. The affected products will include major US exports such as coolers, paper, food products, and certain metals. The objective of this move is to exert pressure on American goods that Canada perceives as causing trade imbalances.

Additional 25% Tariff to Follow in Three Weeks

Trudeau also announced that after the first phase of tariffs is implemented, a second round of 25% tariffs will be introduced within three weeks. This phase will impose duties on US goods worth 125 billion Canadian dollars. The targeted products will include cars, steel, aluminum, and other key industries, potentially deepening the rift in trade relations between Canada and the US.

“America Is Trying to Please Putin by Waging a Trade War Against Canada”

Trudeau remarked, “Today, America has waged a trade war against Canada, its closest partner, while simultaneously trying to appease Russia’s dictator, Vladimir Putin. Does this make sense?” He directly criticized Trump, calling the decision reckless.

Canada Does Not Want a Trade War

Addressing the American public, Trudeau emphasized that Canada does not want a trade war, but he claimed that Trump has forced this situation. Regarding Russia, Trudeau asked, “How do Americans feel about abandoning their allies in favor of a country that has never acted in the best interest of the American people?”

“Trump’s Goal Is to Harm Canada’s Economy”: Trudeau

Trudeau asserted that Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to harm Canada’s economy in order to gain leverage over the country. “This is what he wants,” Trudeau said. However, he firmly stated that Canada will never succumb to such pressure. “We will never become the 51st state of America,” he declared.
