Fast-Moving Massive Wildfires in Turkey’s Coastal Forests, Forcing Evacuations in Muğla and Antalya

Turkey’s southwestern coastline has once again been hit by a series of rapidly spreading wildfires, with Muğla and Antalya among the worst-affected provinces. The fires, fueled by strong winds, scorching temperatures and extremely low humidity, spread through forested areas and moved dangerously close to residential neighborhoods and holiday destinations.

One of the most serious incidents was reported near Göcek in Muğla’s Fethiye district, where flames erupted in woodland close to residential areas before advancing toward nearby settlements. Thick smoke covered parts of the region as residents watched firefighters battle the blaze from both the ground and the air. As a precaution, authorities evacuated vulnerable neighborhoods, while sections of nearby roads were temporarily closed due to the advancing fire and poor visibility.

The wildfires also disrupted daily life in parts of Antalya, where some holiday accommodations and nearby residential areas were cleared as a safety measure. Officials say the combination of extreme heat and shifting winds has made containment difficult, raising concerns that new hotspots could emerge if weather conditions remain unfavorable.

Turkey experiences forest fires every summer, but this year’s intense heatwave has increased the risk significantly across several Mediterranean provinces. Emergency services remain on alert as weather forecasts continue to predict high temperatures and dry conditions in the coming days.
