Bollywood Desk, Delhi Magazine: Bollywood actress and filmmaker Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency has stirred a significant controversy, leading to its ban in three major cities of Punjab—Patiala, Amritsar, and Bathinda. Protests have erupted across the state, with various Sikh leaders, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), demanding a statewide ban on the film.
Allegations Against the Film
The SGPC and other Sikh leaders have alleged that Emergency “maligns the image of Sikhs.” In a tweet, the SGPC emphasized its demand for a complete ban on the film in Punjab, stating that it misrepresents historical events and disrespects the Sikh community.
The film, scheduled for release on January 17, 2025, portrays the politically charged period of the 1975 Emergency, declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and delves into the historical and political turmoil of the era. Critics claim that the narrative has the potential to polarize audiences nationwide.
Local Authorities’ Stance
Authorities in Patiala, Amritsar, and Bathinda have decided to ban the screening of the film, citing concerns over public sentiment and maintaining communal harmony. Officials have also hinted that the film’s storyline might foster discontent in the region.
Congress Joins the Opposition
Adding to the controversy, Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira voiced his support for the SGPC’s demand. Khaira reshared the SGPC’s letter on Twitter, stating:
“I support the demand of @SGPCAmritsar to ban the film ‘Emergency’ directed by @KanganaTeam without giving importance to the contribution of farmers and Sikhs to our country. This is a complete propaganda of art to tarnish Punjab’s image.”
Khaira also accused the film of portraying Punjab and its people in a negative light and claimed it lacked a truthful depiction of historical events.
Kangana Ranaut’s Response
In response to the allegations, Kangana Ranaut issued a statement defending her film, calling the accusations “false propaganda.” She said:
“This is a complete lie and propaganda to tarnish my image and harm my film. I respect all religions deeply, and this project was created with utmost sincerity to reflect the political and historical turmoil of the Emergency period.”
Praise at a Special Screening
Amidst the controversy, the film garnered glowing reviews at a special screening attended by notable personalities, including veteran actor Anupam Kher and spiritual leader Sadhguru. Sharing his thoughts on social media, Anupam Kher posted a picture of Sadhguru at the theater and wrote:
“The #SpecialScreening of #Emergency was a smash hit. And #Sadhguru’s presence was a blessing. His appreciation for the film meant the world to us. My family, friends, and especially my mother had great things to say about the film! Mom’s departing line to #Kangana, ‘तुम कंगना नहीं इंदिरा गांधी ही हो!’ जय हो! ❤️😍🙌 #EmergencyInTheatres @sadhguru @kanganaranaut @sikandarkher.”
Kangana Ranaut’s Defense
In response to the protests, Kangana defended her film, calling the allegations “false propaganda.” She stated:
“This is a complete lie and propaganda to tarnish my image and harm my film. I respect all religions deeply, and this project was created with utmost sincerity to reflect the political and historical turmoil of the Emergency period.”
A Divisive Debate
While Emergency is scheduled for release on January 17, 2025, it has polarized audiences nationwide. On one side, critics argue that the film misrepresents Punjab and its people, while on the other, it has received applause for its bold portrayal of historical events.
As protests and political tensions continue, the future of Emergency’s release in Punjab hangs in the balance, leaving the nation divided over the narrative it seeks to tell.
