KOLKATA rape victim mother ratna debnath

In one of the most emotionally charged stories of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Ratna Debnath, the mother of the young doctor who was brutally raped and murdered inside Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College in August 2024 , has emerged victorious from the Panihati Assembly constituency.

Contesting on a BJP ticket, Ratna Debnath secured a landslide win with a margin of 28,836 votes, defeating her nearest rival, Trinamool Congress candidate Tirthankar Ghosh. This victory marks her electoral debut and transforms her from a symbol of grief and protest into an elected representative in the West Bengal Assembly.

The RG Kar Tragedy

On 9 August 2024, a 31 year old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found dead in the seminar hall after a 36-hour duty. She had been raped and murdered in one of the most horrific crimes to shake the nation in recent years. The incident exposed serious lapses in hospital security and triggered massive protests across West Bengal and the country. Doctors and citizens demanded justice and better safety measures for women in the medical profession. Ratna Debnath became the public face of this fight for justice. For nearly two years, she persistently demanded accountability, navigating delays in investigation, questions over evidence, and a system that many felt had failed her daughter.

From Streets to the Ballot Box

Instead of limiting herself to protests, Ratna Debnath took a bold step that she entered politics. The Bharatiya Janata Party fielded her from Panihati, turning the constituency into a high-stakes emotional battleground. Her campaign was not centered on traditional political rhetoric but on a mother’s unwavering quest for justice and systemic change. For many voters, her fight symbolized resistance against crimes against women and institutional failure.

A Historic Win

Her decisive victory is being seen as more than just an electoral result. It represents the transformation of personal tragedy into public action. While the legal battle for justice in her daughter’s case continues, Ratna Debnath’s presence in the Assembly ensures that the voice of the RG Kar movement will now be heard within the legislative system.

Political analysts describe this as a rare moment where personal loss has translated into political power, strongly resonating with voters concerned about women’s safety and governance.
