Iranian Footballer Shiva Amini Accuses the Ayatollah Regime of Crushing Women Athletes

In recent years, several Iranian athletes have spoken openly about the challenges they faced under strict social and political rules in their home country. Among them is former Iranian footballer and futsal player Shiva Amini, who has publicly shared her experiences about life as a female athlete in Iran.

Shiva Amini was once a promising member of Iran’s national women’s futsal team. Known for her skill and passion for football, she represented Iran during a time when women’s sports were gaining slow recognition in the country. However, her career took a dramatic turn after images of her playing football without a hijab during a trip abroad circulated on social media.

In Iran, strict regulations require women athletes to follow dress codes that include wearing a hijab during public appearances and sports activities. According to Amini, the controversy surrounding those photographs led to serious consequences for her career.

In interviews with international media outlets, Amini has said that the backlash forced her to step away from her professional sporting career in Iran. She explained that the pressure and scrutiny became overwhelming, leaving her with limited options if she wanted to continue living freely.

Eventually, Amini left Iran and sought asylum in Switzerland. Since then, she has become increasingly vocal about the challenges faced by women athletes in the country. She has spoken about restrictions placed on female players, including limited opportunities, strict regulations, and the pressure to conform to social rules that male athletes do not face in the same way.

Amini has stated that these conditions can make it extremely difficult for women to pursue professional sports careers in Iran. According to her, many talented athletes are discouraged from continuing their careers because of the social and institutional barriers they encounter.

Shiva Amini has also voiced her criticism of Iran’s ruling establishment through social media. In a widely shared Instagram post, the former footballer strongly condemned the authorities, accusing them of executing innocent people and suppressing dissent. In the post, she wrote that children and innocent Iranians were executed “under the sound of your so-called call to prayer and ‘Allahu Akbar’,” adding that the same system later announced the death of those responsible on state television. Her message ended with a bitter remark: “Oh… the irony.” The post quickly circulated online and further highlighted her outspoken stance against Iran’s Ayatollah-led regime.
