Delhi metro rajiv chowk

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the Phase-V expansion of the Delhi Metro, marking another major step towards strengthening public transport infrastructure in the national capital.

As per information shared through official government social media handles, three new metro corridors have been cleared under Phase-V (A). The expansion aims to improve connectivity between central Delhi, airport-linked zones, and densely populated residential areas.

According to the update, the new corridors will collectively add over 16 kilometres to the existing metro network and include a mix of underground and elevated sections. The project will also introduce 13 new stations, significantly easing congestion on key road corridors.

Government sources stated that the expansion is designed to reduce traffic pressure, lower pollution levels, and provide faster, more reliable travel options for daily commuters. With this addition, the Delhi Metro network is expected to move closer to crossing the 400-kilometre milestone.

Officials have indicated that construction timelines and tendering details will be shared separately after technical clearances are completed.

Adding a nostalgic touch to the day, the first-ever train to operate on the Delhi Metro network, ‘TS#01’, was run as a special service to commemorate the anniversary of the commencement of passenger services in 2002.

The heritage train operated on the 8.3-kilometre Shahdara–Tis Hazari section, the same route on which Delhi Metro carried passengers for the first time over two decades ago. The special run allowed commuters to relive the historic inaugural journey of the capital’s metro system.

On the occasion, TS#01 was decorated with flowers and a commemorative banner, while passengers travelling on the special service were welcomed with flowers, creating a festive and emotional atmosphere.

Officials described the run as a tribute to Delhi Metro’s journey from its modest beginning to becoming one of the largest and most efficient urban rail networks in the country. Further details regarding Phase-V timelines and implementation are expected to be announced after completion of technical formalities.
