Delhi Man Carrying Knife Detained Outside Parliament, Identified as Ram Rahim Follower

September 2, 2019: A 26-year-old man from Delhi was arrested after allegedly attempting to enter the Parliament complex while carrying a knife. The man was identified as Sagar Insa, a resident of Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi and a reported follower of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

According to police reports, Sagar arrived near Parliament on a motorcycle on Monday morning. He stopped near Gate No. 1 and allegedly attempted to enter the premises while carrying a knife.

Security personnel intercepted him and handed him over to the Delhi Police. According to initial reports, he also raised slogans in support of Ram Rahim, who was lodged at Sunaria Jail in Haryana’s Rohtak district while serving sentences in rape cases and a journalist’s murder case.

The incident reportedly took place at around 10:45 a.m. Some people present at the location also recorded videos of the incident, which subsequently attracted attention.

Delhi Police Questioned the Man

Following his detention, Sagar was taken to Parliament Street Police Station for questioning. Delhi Police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Eish Singhal, confirmed that a knife had been recovered from him. His motorcycle was also taken into police custody.

According to initial police statements, Sagar was associated with a religious organisation and had raised slogans in support of Ram Rahim. Intelligence Bureau officials also reportedly joined the questioning.

Police were investigating the circumstances behind his attempt to approach Parliament with a knife.

Later reports quoted the police as saying that the man’s association with any particular religious or political group had not been established. He also reportedly told investigators that he wanted to express his views about banning liquor and non-vegetarian food.

The incident prompted security personnel to remain alert around the Parliament complex.
