Atishi visit Munak kanal - Delhi

Delhi, July 12, 2024 — Late last night, between approximately 11 PM and 2 AM, the barrage of Munak canal suddenly broke, leading to severe flooding in various parts of the capital, Delhi. The areas most affected by the breach include Bawana and JJ Colony, where residents faced significant difficulties due to waterlogging.

Massive Water Accumulation

In some areas, water levels reached up to 10 to 12 feet, causing substantial disruption. Residents reported the issue to the Kejriwal government’s department, but were informed that the breached part of the barrage falls under the jurisdiction of the Haryana government. Consequently, the administrative response was delayed until 6 AM, when the staff arrived and began rescue operations.

Ongoing Repair Efforts

Delhi’s Water Minister Atishi announced that the repair work on the damaged section of the Munak canal is expected to be completed by Thursday night. The breach has impacted four water treatment plants in the region.

Minister Atishi visited the site of the damage and confirmed that once the emergency situation is under control, a joint investigation by Delhi and Haryana will be conducted to determine the cause of the canal’s failure. The embankment of the Munak canal broke between 12 AM and 2 AM on Wednesday night, causing water to flood several areas of Bawana.

Coordinated Response

Minister Atishi highlighted that the Munak canal, which transports Yamuna river water to Delhi, is maintained by the Haryana government. A team from Haryana’s irrigation department has been at the site since the breach occurred, and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) teams are also on-site providing assistance.

Efforts to repair the breach are being conducted on a war footing. Minister Atishi assured that they are in constant communication with Haryana’s irrigation department, and the embankment will be rebuilt once the water flow in the Carrier Line Channel (CLC) is halted. It is anticipated that the repair work will be completed by late tonight.

Affected Areas and Water Supply

The water supply through the CLC is expected to resume by Friday afternoon. The breach has affected water treatment plants in Dwarka, Haiderpur, Bawana, and Nangloi. Water purification from the Bawana, Nangloi, and Haiderpur treatment plants is expected to normalize by Thursday evening. However, the Dwarka plant, which relies entirely on CLC for its water supply, will remain affected until Friday evening. Various agencies are working with mobile pumps to drain the water that has accumulated in Bawana due to the canal breach.
