Lucknow, April 7, 2026: In a major relief for Shiksha Mitras across the state, the Uttar Pradesh Government has approved an 80% increase in their monthly honorarium. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and subsequently approved by the State Cabinet, raises the monthly honorarium of Shiksha Mitras from ₹10,000 to ₹18,000. The revised honorarium will be effective from April 1, 2026, and the increased payment will be disbursed from May 2026 onwards.

The decision is expected to benefit approximately 1.43 lakh Shiksha Mitras working in government primary schools across Uttar Pradesh. According to the government, 1,42,929 Shiksha Mitras are currently serving in the state. Most of their honorarium is funded jointly by the Central and State Governments under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, while the remaining expenditure is borne entirely by the Uttar Pradesh Government.

In addition to the hike for Shiksha Mitras, the State Cabinet has also approved an increase in the honorarium of Part-Time Instructors (Anudeshaks) from ₹9,000 to ₹17,000 per month. This decision is expected to benefit thousands of instructors engaged in government schools.

Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh stated that the honorarium revision will place an additional financial burden of approximately ₹1,475 crore annually on the state exchequer. He further clarified that if the Central Government’s contribution is insufficient, the Uttar Pradesh Government will bear the remaining cost from its own resources. The revised honorarium will continue to be paid for 11 months each year, in accordance with the existing payment structure.

Shiksha Mitras had been demanding a revision of their honorarium for several years, arguing that the previous amount of ₹10,000 per month was inadequate in view of rising living costs. Various teacher associations have welcomed the government’s decision, describing it as a significant step toward improving the financial security and morale of Shiksha Mitras and recognizing their contribution to the state’s primary education system.

The Uttar Pradesh Government has expressed confidence that the enhanced honorarium will motivate Shiksha Mitras to continue contributing effectively to the quality of primary education. The government also reiterated its commitment to strengthening the education sector through similar welfare measures in the future.
