Jharkhand Student Protest Continues: Students Stay on the Ground Despite Talks With Government

Ranchi, Jharkhand: The student protest over alleged irregularities in Jharkhand’s JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations has entered a critical stage. Students and job aspirants have continued their protest in Ranchi for more than two weeks, demanding transparency, action against irregularities and changes in the recruitment process.

The protest is being led by students and job aspirants under the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch. The movement has mainly remained focused on examination and recruitment issues rather than political demands.

Students Continue Their Protest

Students have been staying at the protest site in Ranchi and taking part in different forms of peaceful demonstrations. These include sit-ins, speeches, slogan raising, marches and symbolic protests.

One of the major activities was a Tiranga March, in which a large number of students marched through Ranchi carrying the national flag. The march continued despite heavy rain, showing the determination of the protesters.

Students have also announced plans for an Assembly March/Gherao if their demands are not addressed. The next major programme has been announced for August 10.

Hunger Strike Becomes a Major Part of the Movement

The most serious part of the protest is the ongoing hunger strike.

Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto started an indefinite hunger strike in early August. Several other protesters also joined the fast. Reports on August 7 said that six protesters were continuing their indefinite hunger strike.

The health condition of some protesters has become a concern. Mahto has continued his fast despite reports of worsening health.

For the students, the hunger strike has become a way of putting pressure on the government to take concrete action instead of only holding discussions.

What Are the Students Demanding?

The main demands raised by the protesters include:

• Cancellation of the disputed 14th JPSC Preliminary Examination.
• An independent investigation into alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC examinations.
• A CBI investigation or an inquiry by retired High Court judges from outside Jharkhand.
• Greater transparency in the recruitment process.
• Action against those responsible for alleged examination irregularities.
• Reforms in the examination and recruitment system.

The students have argued that recruitment examinations should be conducted in a way that gives candidates confidence that the process is fair and transparent.

Government Holds First Formal Talks With Students

The Jharkhand government and representatives of the protesting students held their first formal talks on August 7.

The meeting was seen as an important development because students had been demanding direct communication with the government. However, the meeting did not result in a final settlement.

Students said that they would continue the agitation until there was concrete action on their major demands.

This means that the dialogue has started, but the protest is not over.

Students Continue Ground-Level Activities

Unlike people who have recently arrived to express support, the main strength of the movement has come from students and job aspirants who have been present at the protest site.

Sit-in protests: Students continue to remain at the protest location and participate in daily demonstrations.

Hunger strike: Some protesters have refused food to press their demands.

Why Is This Protest Important?

The Jharkhand movement is important because government recruitment examinations directly affect thousands of young people who spend years preparing for government jobs.

For many candidates, a recruitment examination is not simply another test. It can decide several years of their career planning.

When candidates raise questions about an examination, they want clear answers about how the examination was conducted, whether the process was fair and what action will be taken if irregularities are established.

The present protest has therefore become a larger debate about trust, transparency and accountability in government recruitment examinations.

The Road Ahead

The government has now opened a dialogue with student representatives, but the major demands remain unresolved.

Students have made it clear that they want concrete action rather than only assurances. At the same time, the government will have to decide how to address the allegations while following the legal and administrative process.
