Shehzad Poonawalla

New Delhi, August 17, 2026: BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has once again submitted his resignation from the party, nearly three weeks after his first resignation was not accepted by the BJP leadership.

Poonawalla announced on Monday that he had once again submitted his resignation letter to BJP national president Nitin Nabin and requested that it be accepted. He said he had reached a “final decision” after long and careful consideration.

His first resignation was submitted on July 30, citing pressing financial and personal circumstances. The party had refused to accept it immediately and had asked him to reconsider his decision. In his latest letter, Poonawalla said that events involving “certain individuals” over the past few days had reinforced his decision to step down.

Despite announcing his departure, Poonawalla’s message remained strongly appreciative of the BJP leadership. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nitin Nabin, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, JP Nadda, B.L. Santosh and other senior leaders for the guidance, respect and opportunities he received during his five years with the party.

He also made it clear that he would continue supporting the broader vision of Prime Minister Modi and the BJP even after moving into the private sector. One of the most notable lines in his letter was: “I am only leaving the Vyavastha, not the Vyakti or Vichar.”

Supporters Urge Poonawalla to Reconsider

The resignation announcement quickly triggered an emotional reaction on social media. At the time of the post shared by Poonawalla, it had received more than 106,000 likes and over 3,600 comments, with many supporters asking him not to leave the party.

One commenter directly appealed to him, saying, “Bhai ik bar fir se vichar kr lo”, urging him to reconsider his decision.

Another user tagged the BJP and asked whether the party could help address the issues Poonawalla was facing, writing that the party should not lose a loyal member because of “certain individuals.”

Several supporters praised Poonawalla’s role as a BJP spokesperson. One comment described him as one of the best spokespersons of any political party, while another said that television debates would not be the same without his fact-based arguments and energetic style.

A supporter wrote that Poonawalla’s departure was a “grave loss for the party,” while another said, “We lost a gem.” Others wished him success in whatever he chooses to do next.

There were also emotional appeals from supporters who appeared disappointed by the announcement, with comments including “Heartbroken,” “Why?” and requests to the BJP to retain him.

Questions Over His Next Move

Alongside the messages of support, some commenters also speculated about what Poonawalla could do next. One user suggested that he might be offered a new position, while another asked whether he was planning to join Congress.

Poonawalla, however, has not announced any plan to join another political party. His resignation letter specifically says that he intends to move into the private sector while continuing to support the vision and work of Prime Minister Modi and the BJP wherever possible.

The comments also showed a divide in the public reaction. While many BJP supporters praised his contribution and asked him to reconsider, some critics questioned his reasons for leaving and speculated about internal political circumstances.

For now, Poonawalla’s second resignation marks a significant change in his political career. Whether the BJP accepts the resignation this time remains a key question, but his latest letter makes clear that he considers his decision final.

He ended his message with “Vande Mataram” and “Jai Hind.”
