Dropping head syndrome

Health Desk, Delhi Magazine: In Japan, a 25-year-old man’s excessive habit of playing mobile games for hours had a serious impact on his health. This young man regularly used his mobile phone with his neck bent forward for prolonged periods, which eventually led to a rare condition known as “Dropping Head Syndrome”. According to doctors, the prolonged forward-leaning posture weakened his neck muscles and misaligned his cervical spine, resulting in difficulty in lifting his head without support.

How Mobile Gaming Damaged His Neck

This unusual case was documented in the medical journal JOS Case Reports. It revealed that constant neck flexion caused the bones in the young man’s neck to weaken and scar tissue to form on the upper cervical vertebrae. Physicians noted that the patient’s long gaming sessions with poor posture resulted in significant muscle fatigue and weakening of the neck muscles. Over time, a noticeable lump developed at the back of his neck due to muscular and tissue degeneration.

Before seeking treatment, the patient experienced intense neck pain, difficulty in swallowing, and rapid weight loss due to reduced food intake. Initially, doctors prescribed a neck collar to support his head, but when he began experiencing numbness in the neck region, they opted for surgical intervention.

Surgical Treatment and Recovery

During surgery, doctors realigned the abnormal curvature of his cervical spine and removed the damaged tissues. Metal rods and screws were inserted to stabilize the vertebrae. Six months post-surgery, the patient’s condition significantly improved. He regained the ability to hold his head upright without assistance and resumed normal daily activities.

The Mental Health Link and Digital Isolation

Doctors further revealed that the patient was socially active as a child, but in adolescence, he faced bullying at school, which led to social withdrawal. He eventually dropped out and confined himself to his room, spending excessive time on mobile gaming. His digital isolation and sedentary lifestyle had a direct negative effect on his physical health, culminating in this rare and severe condition.

Understanding “Dropping Head Syndrome”

Dropping Head Syndrome” (DHS) is a condition characterized by severe weakness of the neck extensor muscles, making it difficult or impossible to lift the head. While often associated with neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or polymyositis, DHS can also be induced by poor posture and repetitive strain, especially in individuals who maintain a forward head posture for extended periods.

According to research published in Frontiers in Neurology, prolonged static postures, particularly in mobile device users, can contribute to what is colloquially known as “text neck” — a modern term describing stress injury and pain from looking down at mobile devices too frequently (Neupane et al., 2017).

Preventive Measures and Awareness

This case is a clear warning about the physical dangers of prolonged mobile device usage and poor posture. Health experts advise:

  • Maintaining proper posture: Sit with your back straight, shoulders back, and the device at eye level.
  • Taking frequent breaks: Every 20-30 minutes, look away from the screen and stretch.
  • Neck strengthening exercises: Engage in regular physical activity that targets neck and upper back muscles.
  • Early medical consultation: Persistent neck pain, stiffness, or numbness should not be ignored.

If left untreated, conditions like Dropping Head Syndrome can result in permanent spinal damage, chronic pain, and reduced quality of life.
