Government of India Plans Eco-Tourism Initiatives Around Freshwater Lakes to Boost Conservation and Sustainable Development

This ambitious project aims to promote eco-friendly tourism while preserving the ecological balance of these vital water bodies.

India is endowed with a rich array of freshwater lakes, each offering unique ecosystems and scenic beauty. Recognizing the potential for eco-tourism to generate sustainable economic growth and raise environmental awareness, the government is focusing on integrating tourism development with conservation efforts.

The project will involve the creation of eco-friendly infrastructure such as sustainable lodges, walking trails, and visitor centers, designed to provide tourists with an immersive experience in nature without harming the environment. The initiative also emphasizes community involvement, aiming to empower local populations through employment opportunities and capacity-building programs.

As part of the ongoing efforts, the government has already sanctioned and released funds for various eco-tourism projects across several states. Here are some key initiatives:

  1. Uttarakhand (2015-16): The “Integrated Development of Eco-Tourism, Adventure Sports, and Associated Tourism Related Infrastructure for Development of Tehri Lake & Surroundings” project was sanctioned an amount of ₹69.17 crores, which has been fully released. This project focuses on developing Tehri Lake in Tehri district as a new tourism destination.
  2. Telangana (2015-16): The “Development of Circuit in Mahaboobnagar districts” covering areas such as Somasila, Singotam, Kadalaivanam, and others was sanctioned ₹91.62 crores, with ₹91.25 crores released. This initiative aims to enhance tourism infrastructure and promote eco-tourism circuits in Telangana.
  3. Kerala (2015-16): The “Development of Pathanamthitta-Gavi-Vagamon-Thekkady” circuit received ₹64.08 crores, which has been fully utilized. This project is focused on promoting eco-tourism in the lush green landscapes of Kerala, known for its serene backwaters and hills.
  4. Mizoram (2016-17): The “Development of Eco-Adventure Circuit at Aizawl and other locations” was allocated ₹66.37 crores, with ₹53.09 crores released so far. This project aims to attract adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers to Mizoram’s unexplored terrains.
  5. Madhya Pradesh (2017-18): The state received ₹93.76 crores for the “Development of Gandhisagar Dam and other dam sites,” with ₹93.59 crores already released. This initiative aims to leverage the state’s water resources for eco-tourism while ensuring sustainable development.
  6. Jharkhand (2018-19): The “Development of Eco Tourism circuit: Dalma-Betla National park-Mirchaiya-Netarhat” project was sanctioned ₹30.44 crores, with ₹28.04 crores released. This project focuses on developing eco-tourism circuits that highlight Jharkhand’s natural beauty and wildlife.

In total, the government has sanctioned ₹415.44 crores for these projects, of which ₹399.22 crores have already been released, underscoring the commitment to enhancing eco-tourism across the country.
