Seoul Desk, Delhi Magazine: South Korea’s political turmoil deepened as former President Yoon Suk Yeol, currently detained following his impeachment and arrest, addressed the nation in a heartfelt letter delivered through his lawyer on January 17, 2025.
In the letter, Yoon sought to reassure his supporters about his well-being, stating, “How are you, my people? It’s a little uncomfortable, but I’m doing well in prison.” Reflecting on his presidency, he mentioned revisiting his speeches and declarations, including his inaugural address and significant national commemorations, such as the Section 3.1 Movement and Palm Sunday.
Yoon expressed gratitude to the citizens demonstrating in his support amid the frigid winter conditions, saying, “Many people are out on the cold streets… For the sake of the country, I heard you are gathering your strength. Thank you for your fierce patriotism.”
The former president, detained at the Seoul Detention Center, was impeached by the National Assembly on December 14, 2024, following his controversial declaration of martial law, accusations of abuse of power, and charges of insurrection. His arrest and subsequent legal proceedings have ignited violent protests from his supporters, drawing comparisons to global populist movements.
Yoon’s supporters continue to rally outside government institutions, calling for his release and denouncing the impeachment process as politically motivated. The Constitutional Court is deliberating on whether to permanently remove him from office, a decision that could have far-reaching consequences for South Korea’s political future.
