The meeting took place on the sidelines of the European Council, alongside the prime ministers of Denmark and the Netherlands, Mette Frederiksen and Rob Jetten.

Focus on Border Security and Migration Procedures

According to Meloni’s statement, the talks reviewed progress made in recent months and considered priorities for upcoming initiatives. Key issues included preventing irregular mass arrivals, addressing the use of migration as a political instrument and putting the new European migration framework into practice.

Meloni also referred to recent events in Ceuta, stressing the importance of maintaining high vigilance at the European Union’s external borders. She called for stronger efforts to prevent illegal immigration and related security risks.

The Italian leader further advocated a targeted revision of European legislation to make procedures for detaining irregular migrants during border processing more effective.

A Coordinated European Approach

The meeting reflects ongoing discussions among European governments over how to strengthen border management while improving the implementation of common migration rules.

With migration remaining a major policy issue across the European Union, cooperation among member states is expected to remain central to efforts to address irregular migration and improve the effectiveness of border procedures.
