International Desk, Delhi Magazine: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday that India and Russia are collaborating to facilitate the return of Indian citizens serving in the Russian Armed Forces. This development follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Moscow on July 8 and 9.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal revealed, “We have information about approximately 50 Indian citizens who currently wish to leave the Russian Armed Forces.” During his weekly press conference, Jaiswal explained that these cases involve individuals or their family members seeking assistance for the earliest possible termination of their service.

Jaiswal emphasized that the issue has been raised with Russian authorities at various levels, including the leadership level. “The Prime Minister addressed the matter during his recent visit to Russia, and the Russian side has responded positively to our request. Both sides are working to expedite the release of Indian nationals,” he added.

The MEA had previously expressed “extreme concern” over Indian nationals serving in the Russian army and had sought action from Russia. On June 11, India reported the deaths of two Indian nationals recruited in the Russian army during the recent conflict with Ukraine. To date, four Indian nationals serving in the Russian army have lost their lives.

Following the deaths, the MEA demanded a complete ban on the recruitment of Indian nationals by the Russian army, stating that such activities are not in line with India’s partnership with Russia. The Ministry issued a strongly worded statement insisting on the cessation of recruitment practices.

Notable cases include the death of 30-year-old Mohammed Asfan from Hyderabad, who succumbed to injuries sustained while fighting in Ukraine on behalf of Russia in March. Additionally, 23-year-old Hemal Ashwinbhai Manguha from Surat, Gujarat, was killed in a Ukrainian air strike in February while serving as a ‘security assistant’ in the Donetsk region.

The MEA continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of Indian nationals abroad and is actively working to ensure the prompt return of those serving in the Russian Armed Forces.
