Relegious Desk, Delhi Magazine: Today (19th July), we honor Saint Arsenius the Great, a revered figure in both religious and historical contexts. Born in 354 AD in Rome, Saint Arsenius came from a noble Roman family with several senators among his relatives.
Arsenius’s name is of Greek origin, meaning “energetic man.” In Spain, 2,953 men celebrate their saint’s day today, thanks to the legacy of Saint Arsenius the Great.
After receiving extensive education, Arsenius was ordained as a deacon by Pope Damasus I. Recognizing his expertise in Greek literature, the Pope recommended him to Emperor Theodosius I the Great as the tutor for his sons, Arcadius and Honorius. Arsenius served in this esteemed position for 11 years in Constantinople.
Following his tenure as a tutor, Arsenius chose a life of asceticism, joining the monks and hermits in the Egyptian desert. His devotion and wisdom earned him a place among the most renowned Desert Fathers, making him a prominent anchorite.
