Political Desk, Delhi Magazine: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed deep concern over the struggles faced by gig workers in India, particularly cab drivers and delivery agents. Gandhi’s video, which has garnered widespread attention, underscored the financial hardships endured by these workers and their families, many of whom are living hand-to-mouth with no savings or security for the future.

“No savings, no time to build the future of the family – the problems of the cab drivers and their families of India have no limits,” Gandhi said. He emphasized the urgent need for policy reforms to improve the lives of gig workers, noting that low income and rising inflation are exacerbating their difficulties.

During an Uber ride with Sunil Upadhyay, a cab driver, Gandhi engaged in a candid discussion about the challenges faced by gig workers. He later met with Upadhyay’s family to gain further insights into the issues plaguing this segment of the workforce. “They are surviving with difficulty on a ‘hand to mouth income’ – no savings and no basis for the future of their family,” he noted.

Gandhi pledged that Congress-led state governments would prioritize justice for gig workers by developing and implementing concrete policies. He also assured that the INDIA coalition would work tirelessly to expand these reforms nationwide, ensuring a better future for gig workers and their families.

The post has sparked a conversation about the need for better protections and support for gig workers, a group that has grown significantly in India’s evolving economy. Gandhi’s promise of policy action suggests that the Congress party is keenly aware of the importance of addressing these issues in the run-up to future elections.

In addition to his advocacy for gig workers, Rahul Gandhi participated in the Flag Hoisting ceremony at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in New Delhi on August 15.
