Sonam Wangchuk on independence day

Leh, LadakhAugust 15, 2025 — This Independence Day, renowned Ladakhi education reformer and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has shared a powerful message for the nation. While India celebrates its hard-won freedom, Wangchuk emphasized that true independence comes with a deep responsibility to protect the environment.

The inspiration behind the popular “3 Idiots” character “Rancho,” Wangchuk urged citizens to commit to a clean and livable planet. He highlighted that independence is incomplete if we cannot secure a healthy earth for future generations, stressing the urgent need for clean air and clean water.

In his statement, Wangchuk said, “This Independence Day, let’s not just celebrate, but also commit to giving ourselves the right to breathe fresh air and drink clean water.”

Wangchuk is globally recognized for his work in sustainable living, particularly for his Ice Stupa project, which creates artificial glaciers to help local communities with water shortages. He also founded the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), which promotes alternative education.

His message holds significant weight in Ladakh, a region on the frontlines of climate change, but its call for balancing growth with sustainability resonates across the entire country. The activist’s focus on environmental consciousness serves as a timely reminder for a nation celebrating its independence.
