Europe Desk, Delhi Magazine: British citizen David Smith, who worked as a security guard for his country’s embassy in Germany, was engaged in spying for Russia. He himself admitted this.

According to the Evening Standard, Smith decided to become a spy, allegedly because he hates his country. In particular, he was dissatisfied with the fact that a flag was flown in the diplomatic mission in support of the LGBTQ community.

According to the publication, he collected data on the activities of British civil servants from May 2020 to August 2021. He, in particular, was interested in their addresses and phone numbers. He was generally interested in data on the work of the British Embassy in Berlin. It was alleged that he allegedly passed all the information to Major General from Russia Sergei Chukhurov. The latter was listed as the military attaché of the Russian embassy in Germany.

However, in 2021, Smith was detained and extradited to the UK. According to media reports, a letter to Chukhurov was found in the email of a British guard. On May 14, 2020, he allegedly expressed his readiness to cooperate with Russia. The ex-security guard pleaded guilty.

Earlier on Friday, the Swedish prosecutor’s office published a message on its website that it had charged two men, whose citizenship was not specified, with large-scale espionage in favor of the Russian Federation. One of the alleged spies was also charged with “violations in the handling of classified information.”
