New Delhi: Work to clean the Yamuna River in Delhi is moving ahead with a focus on stopping untreated sewage from entering the river and improving treatment systems across the city.

Sewage Treatment Plants Being Upgraded

The Delhi Jal Board is upgrading and expanding several Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). The aim is to increase capacity and improve the quality of treated water before it is released.

Officials say these upgrades are needed to manage the growing amount of wastewater in the city.

Drains Being Diverted Before Reaching the River

Authorities are working on intercepting major drains that currently flow directly into the Yamuna. The sewage from these drains is being redirected to treatment plants instead of entering the river untreated.

This step is considered important to reduce pollution levels in the Delhi stretch of the Yamuna.

In a recent post on social media, the Delhi Chief Minister said that cleaning the Yamuna is a top priority for the government. The Chief Minister stated that the focus is on “policy to ground implementation” and ensuring that sewage treatment capacity is strengthened before untreated water reaches the river.

The post also mentioned that departments have been directed to speed up ongoing projects and ensure strict monitoring of pollution sources.

Cleaning and Monitoring Work Ongoing

Teams are carrying out surface cleaning to remove floating waste from parts of the river. Water quality is also being monitored regularly to check pollution levels and measure improvement.

More Capacity and Control Measures Ahead

Further expansion of treatment systems is planned so that smaller drains can also be connected to the sewage network. Officials are also expected to increase monitoring to prevent illegal discharge into the river.

The current focus remains on improving sewage treatment and reducing pollution load before long-term environmental improvements can be seen.
