Russia’s opposition leader Alexei Navaleni has been sentenced

Russia’s opposition leader Alexei Navaleni has been sentenced to two and a half years by a court there. The court said he violated the terms of his three-and-a-half-year suspended sentence after being convicted in the 2014 money laundering case. After this decision of the court, many protesters came to the streets in his support.

The court discounted the months he spent under house arrest, so he will spend two years and eight months in prison . Enough for his wife, Yulia Navalnaya , separated from her husband by a few meters and a bulletproof glass, burst into tears when she heard a court ruling that everyone expected. “Don’t be sad, everything will be fine,” Navalny muttered to his wife, who in the last week has been fined and arrested twice.

At least 1,400 people have been detained in protests over the release of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny . Moscow was the scene of veritable ‘street hunts’ in which groups of law enforcement officers chased isolated citizens down the street. 1,145 people were arrested in the Russian capital, and another 248 in St. Petersburg.

Security measures in central Moscow were reinforced after calls appeared on social media yesterday to participate in unauthorized demonstrations. Red Square was closed before hearing the court ruling . Before midnight there were already arrests in front of the Kremlin walls. In the narrow streets of the center, groups of citizens gathered before the police. They shouted against the Government, raised their hands as a sign of peace. The police then beat them up. Many Muscovites canceled their plans to avoid hitting the street in the afternoon, as the police response is increasingly violent and unpredictable. The fear of the police is more present now than before.

Navleni was prevented from contesting elections
44-year-old Alexei Navellany is the man running the anti-corruption movement. He tried to contest the presidential election in 2018. But he was convicted on one charge and barred from contesting elections. He was undergoing treatment in Germany since Novichok poisoned on 20 August last year.

Bill on sanctions against Russia over Navalny

Senators from the Republican and Democratic parties submitted to the US Congress a bill on personal sanctions against Russia after the court’s decision to replace Alexey Navalny’s suspended sentence with a real one. A similar document was submitted by almost the same composition of senators in September due to the alleged poisoning of a Russian opposition leader.

“Senators … have reintroduced the bill“ On holding the Russian Federation accountable for malicious activity ”in 2021. The bill introduces targeted sanctions against Russian officials involved in flagrant violations of international law, including the poisoning and imprisonment of opposition leader and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny, ” Senator Marco Rubio said in a statement on his website.
